Liitto (Covenant)

Scottish Charles Sandison, who works in Finland, has created the piece entitled “Liitto” (“Covenant”) in Lasaretti’s Aurora Hall. It features slow-moving, computer-controlled letters, words and figures that form endlessly shifting patters and images that fill the walls.

The silent inevitability of the piece is captivating, creating an experience that surrounds the viewer digitally.

Astro Images

J-P Metsävainio’ s stunning astro images are on display in Lasaretti's Aurora Hall during programme breaks.

Metsävainio is a Finnish astronomer and photographer who enjoys bringing out the hidden beauty in our universe. His observatory is located near the centre of Oulu. Metsävainio was awarded the Stella Arcti Award in 2009. His works have also been featured in several publications, including NASA, National Geographic, LPOD, Sky & Telescope, Universe Today, Daily Mail and Discover Magazine.

Server in Space

Server in Space is an interactive arcade-style installation that invites visitors to take control of a drifting server rack in orbit. Combining pixelated game aesthetics, spatial audio, and a custom three-joystick controller, the work transforms a complex technological system into a playful hands-on experience.

Using three joysticks corresponding to the X, Y, and Z axes, participants rotate and align the server with targets in space, scoring points as they navigate the challenges of orbital movement. A suspended dome speaker and large display create an immersive environment that places the audience at the centre of the action.

Blending retro gaming with contemporary themes of digital infrastructure and humanity's technological reach beyond Earth, Server in Space invites visitors to explore, experiment, and play.

Children’s Art in a Virtual World

The children of a daycare center in Ylikiiminki are participating in the Children as Artists in Oulu project, which aims to make children’s art a visible part of the official Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture programme. Children and young people from the Espoo School of Visual Arts have also created artworks over the summer, which are now entering a new, virtual dimension.

FINverse is a national development project exploring and piloting new digital and virtual environments in cities. The children’s and young people’s virtual art exhibition is one concrete example of how technology and art can come together. The project is carried out by the City of Oulu together with the University of Oulu, Oulu University of Applied Sciences and the City of Espoo, with Tampere also involved as a partner. The project is co-funded by the European Union, with the Regional Council of Pirkanmaa as the funding authority.
